How to Care for Your Denim (and Make It Last a Lifetime)

Denim tells your story. Every fade, crease, and frayed edge is earned. But great denim doesn’t stay great without care. Whether you’re wearing vintage Levi’s, raw selvedge, or your favorite everyday jeans, the way you treat them matters.

At The Denim Workroom, we’re all about preserving what makes denim special—character, comfort, and craftsmanship. Here’s how to keep your jeans in top shape for years to come.

1. Wash Less, Wear More

The golden rule: don’t overwash your denim. Washing too often can strip away color, stiffen fabric, and wear down fibers.

📌 Pro Tip: For raw or selvedge denim, wait at least 30–60 wears before the first wash to let creases and fades set naturally.

2. Spot Clean When You Can

Small stain? Try a spot clean with a damp cloth and a touch of mild soap. Avoid bleach or harsh detergents—they break down indigo dye and damage fabric.

🧼 Suggested Products:

* Dr. Bronner’s mild castile soap

* The Laundress Denim Wash (gentle and plant-based)

3. When You *Do* Wash…

* Turn jeans inside out to protect the surface

* Use cold water and a gentle cycle

* Skip the dryer—air dry instead to prevent shrinkage and preserve shape

🌀 Bonus: Add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to lock in color and kill bacteria naturally.

4. Freeze? Nah. Fold.

You might’ve heard the myth: freezing jeans kills bacteria. It doesn’t. Instead, just hang them in fresh air or fold and store them neatly between wears.

👖 Hanging tip: Use sturdy clips or fold over a hanger bar to avoid damaging the waistband.

5. Repair Before You Replace

Got a tear, busted seam, or worn-out hem? Don’t toss your jeans— tailor them. Repairs add character and extend the life of your favorite pair.

🔧 We specialize in:

* Patchwork repairs

* Waist adjustments

* Vintage denim mending
